What is GST?
GST stands for Goods and Services Tax which is an indirect tax that has superseded numerous other indirect taxes in India, including excise duty, VAT, and service tax. GST is a comprehensive, multi-stage, destination-based tax that is levied on all value added.

How to Generate a GST Challan?
GST challan can be generated on the GST portal with or without logging in to the portal. If the taxpayer decides to generate a challan before logging in, the steps are as follows:
Generate Challan Without Log in-
- Visit homepage on the GST portal’s homepage
- Go to Services then click on Payments
- Now, click on Create Challans.
- Enter details such as GSTIN or ID.
- Enter the Captcha code.
- Enter CGST, SGST or IGST
- Select payment method and fill out bank details..
- Now Enter the GSTIN/Other ID once again
- Click the ‘PROCEED’ button.
- Click download to get the generated challan.
Notes –
- Online mode refers to payments made via internet banking.
- The GST portal accepts payments from a pre-selected list of banks. They must select a bank and pay GST online using a card or net banking right away.
- Once the payment is complete an computerized cash ledger is automatically generates. If the taxpayer generates a challan without logging in, he or she must guarantee that the payment is completed quickly.
Generate GST Challan after login-
If a taxpayer chooses to generate a challan after logging in, he will discover an option to do so on your dashboard.
For this, he must enter the amounts in the appropriate categories and select the preferred payment method.
How to pay GST offline?
- GST payments can be made over the counter or through NEFT/RTGS.
- Enter the bank details
- Click ‘Generate challan’.
- The CPIN is produced from the challan copy and preserved automatically. There is a time constraint of up to 15 days to complete payments through offline options.
Notes-
- Offline payment alternatives include cheque, DD, cash, NEFT, and RTGS, all of which are optional.
- In case a taxpayer bank is not listed in NetBanking these options can be used.
- Once the payment is complete, taxpayer can take a printout.
- Fill required details in the printout and submit it to the bank.
- In case of over the counter banks might take a day or two to process. After that, the sums are updated in the computerized cash ledger.
- Taxpayers can make payment upto 10000 using OTC. If the payable amount exceeds this limit, the taxpayer must use alternative payment methods.
- The processes differ depending on whether the taxpayer picked RTGS/NEFT when producing the challan.
- Once the payment is complete, taxpayer can a printout of challan
- Fill required details in the printout and submit it to the bank.
- After submitting,the bank processes it and provides a Unique Transaction Reference number.
- This UTR number is required to be linked with the challan on the GST portal.
- Now, the electronic cash ledger will be updated.
