Sensex: Domestic benchmark Sensex and Nifty opened lower on Thursday in the wake of higher than anticipated reciprocal tariffs from US President Donald Trump. But, the indices narrowed the early morning losses as investors adjusted to the latest tariff announcement. At 10:41 am on April 3, 2025, Sensex witnessed decline of 172 points to 76,444 and Nifty50 slipped 40.3 points to 23,292. Earlier, Sensex declined 519 points or 0.68% to 76,098 and Nifty slipped 142 points or 0.61% to 23,190 at 9:20 am.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump declared his tariff plans for many of its trade partners. Trumpβs administration levied a 26% blanket tariff on Indian imports which experts believe may put pressure on automobiles sector.
Meanwhile, shares of leading pharmaceuticals sector company have been rising sharply in trade today. The rally in the pharma stocks was triggered after all the pharma imports to the US remain exempt from reciprocal tariffs, according to White House factsheet. According to the document, “Some goods will not be subject to the Reciprocal Tariff. These include copper, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, and lumber articles.β
Donald Trump reportedly stated the rate (26%) was calculated on the basis of cumulative tariffs, that included non-monetary barriers, levied by a nation on American goods. On the basis of this calculation, the US President said India levies a 52% tariff on goods from the US.
Shares of renowned pharmaceuticals company that have been rising today include Gland Pharma Ltd., Emcure Pharmaceuticals, Aurobindo Pharma, Lupin Ltd, Dr Reddyβs Laboratories Ltd, Zydus Lifesciences Ltd.
Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd shares jumped 4.06% on Bombay Stock Exchange to trade at Rs 1783.85 per share. Emcure Pharmaceuticals Ltd shares zoomed 1.24% on BSE to Rs 1068.00 per share. Aurobindo Pharma shares rallied 3.24% in morning trade on BSE to Rs 1196.20 per share.
Lupin Ltd shares gained 4.12% on BSE to trade at Rs 2092.20 per share. Shares of large cap pharmaceuticals sector company Dr Reddyβs Laboratories zoomed 2.18% at 11:00 am today to currently trade at Rs 1174.80 per share. The pharma giant has a market cap of Rs 98,027.23 crore. It zoomed over 4% in last 1-month.
Gland Pharma Ltd shares surged 4.25% on BSE to Rs 1600.30 per share at the time of writing the story. Earlier the stock zoomed 8% in morning trade. Its market cap is Rs 26,365.97 crore. The stock zoomed over 3% in one month. Meanwhile, Zydus Lifesciences Ltd shares zoomed 2.64% on BSE to Rs 914.75 per share. The pharma player has a market cap of Rs 92,176.06 crore.
